Where did November go? Seriously. After my last drawing, my life has been a bit of a whirlwind — hosting Thanksgiving was not only a lot of work but also physically exhausting! Who knew!? (Apparently most people know and I was just totally naive.) With the busyness of the holidays, sleep has gotten a bit low on my priority list . . . which has always kind of been a problem of mine – a dangerous combination of being a night owl + liking early mornings + always knowing there is more to do in a day. Don’t get me wrong, I love sleeping (even though I like early mornings, I usually don’t see them because it is a daily struggle to pull myself out of bed!). This bedroom featured in Design Sponge spoke to me because it just looked so nice and cozy and REAL. A bed worth mayyybe going to bed at a reasonable hour for! So many blogs these days have perfect photos of homes, and while that’s nice to admire, I find it even more inspiring to see a home that looks basically just as nice, but actually looks lived in too. Not my best drawing, but I guess that’s what happens when you need more sleep!
As much as I don’t like the cold, I always look forward to the holidays because I love getting together with big groups of family and friends. Nick and I are hosting Thanksgiving this year, and I can’t stop thinking about what food I’m going to serve! The possibilities are endless, and I’ve already found myself getting way too inspired to make everything from scratch (which of course I don’t have time to do!). Luckily, one of the easiest and most beautiful appetizer options is a cheese plate, so that’s definitely on my list. I’ve been scouring Pinterest for other ideas, but if you have any recommendations for appetizers, main or side dishes, or holiday entertaining in general, send them my way! I’m both excited and nervous about this big task I’ve volunteered for… : )
Ok my friends, it’s officially really (REALLY) cold outside. It’s times like this when I get cravings to stay indoors and curl up under a cozy blanket with a book. I’ve built up quite a reading list over the past few months, and up until now the weather has been too nice to spend free time indoors reading. Even though I’m in two book clubs, the books at the top of my list are actually unrelated to our assigned books for this month (whoops…). Before I joined these book clubs a couple years ago, I had gone through a relatively long period when I hadn’t read any books for pleasure, and that was no fun. Being in book clubs gets me all excited about reading, but I end up most eager to read books that I come across while I’m looking to purchase my assigned books for the month. Here’s a list of some books at the top of my list for this winter: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, Dad Is Fat by Jim Gaffigan, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, Drive by Daniel Pink, and This One Is Mine by Maria Semple (I loved Where’d You Go, Bernadette!). What books are on your reading list for this winter?
Alas, another J. Crew-related post … I’m out of control! I have been in need of a new pair of run-around sneakers for a while – the type of sneakers that you don’t exercise in, but you wear to run errands, go shopping on a relaxed weekend, or take a nice long walk to enjoy the weather. These Colorblock Kicks are just what I’ve been searching for! They’re neutral so they’ll go with most things, but they also have a pop of neon so they’re not boring – plus they are perfect fall colors! Love them and totally going to add them to my closet : ) Happy Friday!
PS – I’m going to get more colored pencils this weekend so my colors can be more accurate – yippee!
Every fall I get a really strong urge to bake up a storm! After apple picking, I baked cookies and bread, and wanted to make pie but I was missing some ingredients (finally got the ingredients, but the pie is still on my to-do list). As I was flipping through Real Simple‘s November issue for more baking ideas, I came across this delicious looking cranberry custard pie. I’m not sure if I would actually like the taste of this, but it looked so pretty I had to try drawing it!
I don’t know why, but I’ve been feeling very uninspired and unmotivated to do anything Halloween-related this year…including doing a Halloween post. Anyway, it is what it is, and I think my mood about it comes through pretty clearly in this drawing of my “costume” this year. Yes, that’s right, a “cool cat” – one of the most uncreative and easy costumes possible. hah. Onward to Thanksgiving!
I went apple picking this weekend at Homestead Farm with some friends from law school. It was such a perfect fall day! Nick and I picked wayyy too many apples, so send your recipes my way! We also bought a beautiful faded orange pumpkin, some mini gourds, fresh green beans, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, peppers, and broccoli! They had such a great selection of produce, I was super inspired to get my inner homemaker on. So far I’ve only cut up a pepper and eaten it for a snack, so that was a short-lived dream.
